Lawns and plants not only look good, they are one of our important arms against increasing pollution. Plants also help in improving the overall health of human beings. Planting new shrubs and trees is not a difficult task. Some of the main things that are important in taking care of plants include:

  • Plants’ aftercare
In this article, we will discuss the aftercare of plants. for more about Boise lawn care please visit our home page.

Plants’ Aftercare

Once plants and shrubs are planted, the next step is to look after and take good care of them. Following are the steps of plants’ aftercare:

  • Watering of Plants – Drought or lack of water is the main problem for many of the newly planted shrubs and trees. Even if the soil seems wet to you, area around the roots may be dry and do not contain enough water as per the requirements of plants. The condition may get worsen during dry weather.

Too much water can also cause rotting of roots, and it can create same condition for plants as drought can.

To overcome these problems, you can use any of the watering aids, such as irrigation tubes and watering bags.

  • Weed Free Area – Weeds can intercept the watering of newly planted shrubs and trees. To overcome this problem, you can:
    • For the first three years of trees, don’t grow any vegetation in their diameter of around 4ft.
    • Keep this circle free of weeds with the help of weed killers or through hoeing.
  • Use of Fertilizers – Fertilizers are not required at the time of planting trees and shrubs, but you can use them after a season to boost their growth.
  • Pruning – You should carry out the formative pruning while the plants are still young. This may involve shortening any competitive stems, and removing of any diseased or dead parts of the plants.

Pruning of Trees and Shrubs

Pruning of trees and shrubs is an easy job which only takes a few minutes, but have is extremely important for plants. Unfortunately, this easy task is mostly neglected by most of the people. Many people think that pruning is a black art, difficult to do, and does not reward as much as it should. But the truth is, by performing pruning, you can get healthier plants and more flowers.

Following are some simple and easy to do plant pruning techniques. Once you master them, you can treat your plants well.

  • Heading: In this type of pruning, long un-branched stems should be cut just above the buds, with the help of hand pruners. This technique is used for younger shrubs to help them grow. Heading helps the lower branches of the shrubs to grow, which enhances the natural form of shrubs.

  • Renovation Pruning: This type of pruning is done on older shrubs and is more extensive as compared to heading. In renovation pruning, all the unproductive stems are cut from the shrubs, and only new stems that are flower producing are left on the plant. A more drastic approach is taken for the neglected shrubs. During winter season, when these plants are in dormancy, with the help of pruning saw or loppers, cut all the stems leaving only about an inch from the ground. As soon as spring arrive, new stems will be produced quickly that will be healthier as well.

  • Pruning Small Flowering Trees: Be careful while pruning newly planted trees. As these new plants need many new leaves to fulfill the requirement of growing roots. Cut only those branches that are dead, broken, or injured.
To take good care of your shrubs and trees, you don’t need to buy expensive tools and chemicals. With a little wisdom and knowledge, you can enjoy healthy growth of your trees and shrubs.
