One of our main services come spring or headed into fall is for lawn aeration. We are always happy to help and know just how important this process is to the overall heath or your grass.

Safari Lawn Care uses a core aeration process. Which has many benefits including:

  • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.
  • Enhanced soil water uptake.
  • Improved fertilizer uptake and use.
  • Reduced water runoff and puddling.
  • Stronger turfgrass roots.
  • Reduced soil compaction.
  • Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance.
  • Improved resiliency and cushioning.

These are just a few benefits of the aeration process. Ultimately your soil will be a much

healthier environment for your grass. Allowing the grass to grow thicker and vibrant green.

  • Why Should I Aerate my lawn?

Aerating your lawn in Boise, Idaho is crucial for maintaining a healthy and vibrant lawn. The soil in this region is typically clay-based and compacted, making it difficult for air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the root zone of the grass. By aerating, you create small holes in the soil, allowing for better airflow, improved water absorption, and increased root development. This process helps the grass to grow stronger, reduces thatch buildup, and enhances overall lawn health.

  • When should I Aerate my lawn?

The best time to aerate your lawn in Boise is during the fall season, preferably in late August to early October. Aerating during this period allows the grass to recover and grow before the cold winter months. Additionally, the soil is usually softer, making it easier to penetrate and aerate effectively. However, if your lawn suffers from severe compacted soil or drainage issues, aerating can also be done in the spring.

  • How to Aerate your lawn.

It's a process and takes specialized equipment to properly aerate a lawn.

    • Inspect for any severely damaged areas that need extra attention
    • water thoroughly a day or so before aerating
    • Use the correct equipment- you'll need a core aerator
    • Mark sprinklers and obstacles
    • Aerate
    • Leave Plugs
    • Water Lawn Deeply
  • How to Dethatch your lawn

Dethatching is the process of removing the layer of dead grass, roots, and debris known as thatch that accumulates between the soil and the grass blades. While aeration can help reduce thatch buildup, occasionally dethatching may be necessary. Here's how you can dethatch your lawn in Boise, Idaho

    1. Assess the need: Check your lawn for signs of excessive thatch, such as spongy or uneven areas, reduced water infiltration, or poor grass growth. If the thatch layer is more than half an inch thick, dethatching might be necessary.

    2. Choose the right time: Dethatching is best done in early spring or early fall when the grass is actively growing, and the weather is cooler. Avoid dethatching during periods of high heat or drought.

    3. Mow the lawn: Before dethatching, mow the grass slightly shorter than usual to make it easier to reach the thatch layer.

    4. Select the appropriate equipment: Use a dethatching rake or a power dethatcher machine.

    5. Dethatch the lawn: Using the chosen equipment, rake or power dethatch the lawn in overlapping passes, going against the direction of the thatch. Be careful not to scalp or damage the grass.

    6. Collect and dispose of the thatch debris properly to prevent it from smothering the lawn.

    7. After dethatching, water the lawn thoroughly and apply a light fertilizer to encourage recovery and new growth. Consider overseeding if necessary.

  • Should I Aerate or Dethatch?

Both aeration and dethatching serve different purposes and can benefit your lawn in Boise, Idaho. If your lawn suffers from compacted soil, poor water absorption, or lacks proper airflow, aeration should be prioritized. It helps alleviate these issues and promotes healthier root growth.

On the other hand, dethatching is necessary when excessive thatch buildup occurs, as it can prevent water and nutrients from reaching the roots. If your lawn shows signs of spongy areas or reduced growth, dethatching may be required. In some cases, it may be beneficial to combine both processes for optimal lawn health.

Consider consulting Safari Lawn Care to assess your specific lawn needs and provide appropriate recommendations.
